Weigh the door with the springs unwound. Enter the numbers. Get the exact spring and the exact quarter turns — or use the turns chart below.
Enter the spring you are actually installing and this solves the wind for it, rather than quoting a rule of thumb.
This is the same math I use on the job across Miami-Dade and Broward. I size the spring to your door — not whatever is closest on the truck — and back it with a 10-year warranty. Flat rate, out-the-door: $299 for a single torsion spring, $549 for a pair.
Call (786) 575-3463Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury or death. This calculator is for information only. Never loosen the set screws on a wound spring, and leave winding and replacement to a trained technician with proper winding bars.
The rule of thumb: about one turn per foot of door height, plus about ΒΎ of a turn to keep the cables tight and the door up at the top. On a standard 4-inch (400-8) drum:
| Door height | Turns | Quarter turns |
|---|---|---|
| 6' 6" | 7 | 28 |
| 7' | 7.25 | 29 |
| 7' 6" | 7.75 | 31 |
| 8' | 8.25 | 33 |
| 9' | 9.25 | 37 |
| 10' | 10.25 | 41 |
| 12' | 12 | 48 |
Doors over 8 feet usually need larger (400-12 or high-lift) drums, which changes the count. The chart is a starting point; the calculator above solves for your exact spring.
Only measure a spring that is broken or fully unwound, with the door closed. If you are not sure, have a technician measure it.
This calculator is for torsion springs. Extension springs (the long springs that run along the tracks) are sized by door weight and height and replaced in pairs β see extension spring replacement. Converting from extension to torsion is often worth it on heavier doors; we quote both options.
Flat rate, out-the-door: $299 for a single torsion spring replacement or $549 for a pair, with a 10-year spring warranty and a free 25-point inspection. 24/7 dispatch across Miami-Dade and Broward.
